Excalibur Volleyball Season Preview: Teams look to continue building strong foundation for current and future seasons

The Trent Excalibur volleyball teams are set to take the court for the start of the 2021 Ontario University Athletics season. Hosting the Nipissing Lakers at the Trent Athletics Centre on November 6 and 7, the women's and men's teams are ready to continue building a strong foundation for current and future seasons.

"One of our main goals this season is to continue building a solid foundation based on competitiveness, positivity, and encouragement for the team moving forward," said women's volleyball co-captain, Heidi Hayes. "We have a new squad this season with some new  talented and dynamic players."

The men's team is on the same page, as they are also a young team looking forward for the experience the OUA season brings.

"Our team's goals this season are to both compete and build towards the future," added fourth year middle blocker Daniel Austin. "We obviously want to win every game that we are playing but we also understand that as a program, we are very young and so we're trying to stress the little things that build a championship culture and take pride in the process."

Having the first few months of the school year to get back into their routines, the teams are prepared for this weekend's double header against the Nipissing Lakers. Being back on the court with teammates, rookies, veterans and coaching staff are all motivated show what they are capable of on the court.

With friends and family welcomed back into the Athletics Centre to cheer on the Excalibur volleyball teams, the excitement level is only rising as the home opener approaches.

"Being back in the gym feels amazing," said Austin. "After a year without competition, the energy in practice has been unbelievable. As a team we can't wait for the home opener to get back on the court in front of our home fans and feel that game day energy again!"

After solid preseason exhibition matches, the women's and men's volleyball teams are determined to get their season started with a strong performance and are ready to put on the green and white to represent the Trent Excalibur once again.

"I have always taken great pride in being a varsity student-athlete, as well as being a part of the 1EX family," said Hayes. "I am thankful every day that I, along with my teammates, are healthy and able to experience being a Trent varsity student-athlete again. I am so excited and grateful that I get to finish my last year at Trent wearing a green and white jersey."
