Green and White Athletic Financial Awards

The Green and White Athletic Financial Awards are offered by Trent University's Department of Athletics & Recreation to entering student-athletes who have achieved an entering academic average above 80%, and have been recruited for athletics skills and abilities. Green & White Athletic Financial Awards are awarded by respective team Head Coaches. Please contact the Head Coach of your sport for more information.

 

ATHLETIC PRIZES, AWARDS, AND BURSARIES

Rewarding academic excellence and making transformative educational experiences finalcially accessible for all students. It's what we believe in at Trent.

Awards and Bursaries are awarded each term to students with demonstrated financial need. Students complete one application to be considered for all available bursaries and awards. For more information please visit trentu.ca/studentfinances

Definitions

Scholarship: A grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement.

Prize: Awarded by an academic department, usually based upon academic excellence or based upon the donor’s criteria.

Bursary: Funding provided by Trent University to a student with a demonstrated financial need. 

Award: Funding provided by Trent University to a student with a demonstrated financial need that includes additional merit‐based eligibility criteria such as community service, athletic involvement or academic achievement. The term ‘bursary’ may be used to describe bursaries and needs-based awards.

Athletic Entrance Bursary

Athletic bursaries valued at a minimum of $500 are awarded to entering varsity athletes with a demonstrated financial need. Entrance bursary applications are available in the myTrent student portal, under the Finances page. Applications are available beginning in June of each year and the deadline to apply is July 31st.

 

In-Course Bursaries for Student-Athletes

Bursaries are awarded each term to students with demonstrated financial need. To demonstrate financial need, students must be in receipt of OSAP, Canada part time student loans, First Nations band funding, or the government financial aid program of their home province. Bursaries are designed to supplement funding from other sources.

Students may complete one application at the beginning of each term to be assessed for all available bursary funding. The application is available, at the beginning of each term, in the myTrent student portal.

The following In-Course Bursaries & Awards are available for student-athletes:

  • Black or Indigenous Heritage Student-Athlete Bursary: The Black or Indigenous Heritage Student-Athlete (BIHS) Bursary is available to student-athletes whose heritage is self-identified as either Black or Indigenous and provides additional financial support to those demonstrating financial need.
  • Bonnie M. Patterson Athletic Financial Award: Created as a tribute to Bonnie Patterson, President & Vice Chancellor of Trent University from 1998-2009. Awarded to returning full-time undergraduate students participating in the varsity athletics program on the recommendation of the Director, Athletics and approval by the President, Trent University. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Aidan Lumley Bursary for Athletics: Named in memory of Aidan Lumley, a third year Trent student and member of Trent’s swim team. To be awarded to a deserving undergraduate student of good academic standing who is a member of any varsity or intramural team. Preference is to support a competitive swimmer. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Ben Kinzett Varsity Volleyball Assistance Fund: To be awarded to a deserving Trent Varsity Volleyball athlete by providing financial assistance so they may continue to play with minimum financial hardship while completing their academic studies. This fund was created to honour Ben Kinzett, a player of good character, kindness, team spirit, and athletic skill. Due to sentimental reasons, preference is given to a member of the Trent Men’s Varsity Volleyball team but may be awarded to a female varsity volleyball player if no men qualify.
  • Brian Heeney Memorial Bursary: Established in memory of the late Brian Heeney, Vice-President (academic) and Provost of Trent at the time of his death on September 17, 1983. Awarded to a graduate from Lakefield College School and/or any students living in Selwyn Township who enroll at Trent in an undergraduate program, based on academic standing, financial need and distinction in cultural, athletic or community activities.   • Cremers Brothers Electric Ltd. Award for Athletic Financial Assistance: To be awarded to an entering or returning full-time undergraduate student athlete in any program who participates in Trent varsity or intramural sports and who attended a Peterborough City or County high school. Each award has a value of $1,000. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Dan Coholan Rowing Bursary: Established by alumnus Dan Coholan ’77. To be awarded to one female and one male rower participating in the varsity rowing program and who are full-time undergraduate students in any program. OSOTF guidelines apply.
  • Darling Insurance & Realty Limited Athletic Award: To be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student athlete in any program who participates in Trent varsity or intramural sports and who attended a Peterborough City or County high school. OTSS guidelines will apply
  • Ed Lupton Memorial Athletics Bursary: Established in memory of Ed Lupton by his loving daughter, Sue Lupton, who served on the Board of Governors (2009–2012). Ed founded Millwork Home Centres in 1950 and was inducted into the Industry Hall of Fame in 2004. To be awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are involved in athletics and recreation at Trent. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Henniger/Pilkington Bursary: Established in honour of Perry and Ella Henniger and Lawrence and Norah Pilkington, the parents of Jim and Isabel Henniger. Awarded to well-rounded students that are actively involved in the life of the University, be it student government, sports or music programs, or University clubs. Awarded on a renewable basis to second-, third-, or fourth-year students. OSOTF guidelines apply
  • McGregor Family Athletic Bursary: Established by Barbara, Betsy, John and Marg McGregor who are supporters of women’s soccer. Awarded to an undergraduate student in any year of any program participating on the varsity women’s soccer team, or if no member of the soccer team is eligible it may be awarded to a female player participating in another varsity sport selected by the donor. May be awarded as an athletic financial award to entering students. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Perkins+Will Canada Athletic Award: Established by an architectural consulting firm that has designed several buildings on the Trent campus. To be awarded to students who are participating in athletics and have a minimum C+ average. Preference will be given to members of a varsity team and if there are no students who qualify, it may be awarded to students on intramural teams. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament Athletics Bursary: Awarded to a full-time student registered in any program and in any year who is playing varsity or intramural sports. The student must have attended a Peterborough County high school. This bursary may be awarded to qualified entering students for recruitment to Trent’s varsity teams. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Sherratt Bursary for Athletics: Established by Fred Sherratt, former vice-chair of CHUM Limited and a member of Trent’s Board of Governors. Awarded to entering, transfer, or returning full-time undergraduate or graduate students participating in the varsity athletics program. OTSS guidelines apply.
  • Swish Maintenance Limited Athletic Award: This award was established by a local Peterborough company, founded by Walter Ambler in 1956. To be awarded to a full-time undergraduate student athlete in any program, who participates in Trent varsity sports. OTSS guidelines apply
  • P. S. B. Wilson Bursary: Established in honour of Paul S. B. Wilson, former director of Athletics. Awarded to a returning student on the basis of a significant contribution to the athletics program. OSOTF guidelines apply.
  • Victor E. Henderson Bursary: Established in honour of Victor E. Henderson, local campaign chairman of the Trent University Second Decade Fund. Awarded to first-year students from Peterborough County based on academic achievement and distinction in cultural, athletic, or other community activities.
  • Wolff Family Bursary: Established by Ruth Wolff ’67 and Gary Wolff ’67, chair of Trent’s Board of Governors (1999– 2002) and co-chair of the Sport, Recreation & Wellness for All Campaign (2009–2010). To be awarded to full-time entering or returning undergraduate students participating in the varsity athletics program. OTSS guidelines apply 

Sport-Specific Prizes for Student-Athletes

The following sport-specific prizes are voted on by team or awarded by coaches. Sport-specific prizes include:

  • Gillian Stamp Volleyball Prize: Awarded to the player, selected by her team mates who, continually demonstrates dedication, commitment and loyalty to her team both on and off the playing field. Through leadership, fair play and enthusiasm, she is an inspiration to her team mates in their pursuit of academic excellence, volleyball or another sport.
  • Jim Dolan/Ron Reid Alumni Rugby Prize: These prizes are awarded to Trent Rugby players on the men's varsity rugby teams. The recipients are chosen by their teammates based upon the player(s) who demonstrates the most heart and desire on their team.
  • Rosemary Faye Dolan Rugby Prize: These prizes are awarded to Trent Rugby players on the women's varsity team. The recipients are chosen by their teammates based upon the player(s) who demonstrates the most heart and desire on their team.
  • Tariq Rafi Prize: Established by friends, family and teammates in memory of Tariq Rafi ‘86 who embodied the spirit of Trent rugby. To be awarded to the Trent men’s rugby varsity player who in the view of coaches and players, stands out for strength, courage and perseverance.
  • Trent Women’s Rugby Alumni Prize: To be awarded to a second, third or fourth year student on the Excalibur varsity women’s rugby team who, in the view of coaches embodies commitment, courage, perseverance and dedication.
