Safe Sport

Trent University Athletics & Recreation is committed to creating a safe, positive and healthy training and competitive environment free of maltreatment and abuse.

The Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS) is the core document that sets harmonized rules to be adopted by sport organizations that receive funding from the Government of Canada to advance a respectful sport culture that delivers quality, inclusive, accessible, welcoming and safe sport experiences.

Trent University and the Department of Athletics are fully committed to and supportive of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (the “UCCMS”) and are committed to creating a sport environment that is free from all forms of Maltreatment and that treats all Participants with dignity and respect. Trent Athletics has adopted the UCCMS (Sections 1-5). As a coach or student athlete at Trent University, you are expected to follow the values, principles and guidelines of the UCCMS.

PREVENTION

Screening and Hiring Practices

All of our staff are screened during the recruitment process including criminal background checks and vulnerable sector checks.

Training and Education

Our coaches and Athletics & Recreation staff are required to complete online training and education, including:

The Responsible Coaching Movement

The Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) is a call to action for sport organizations, parents, and coaches to enact responsible coaching across Canada — on and off the field.

Established by the Coaching Association of Canada and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, the RCM invites all coaches and sport organizations to learn and apply consistent coaching principles. It includes three distinct pillars, each serving to create a sport environment that is Safe, Smart and Secure.

We have taken the RCM pledge and, in doing so, not only require our coaches to adhere to the Responsible Coaching requirements, but also encourage them to self-educate on the additional components of the true sport principles.

POLICIES AND CODE OF CONDUCT

As part of our Safe Sport commitment we require our coaches and student-athletes to adhere to various protection and sanctioning based policies and codes of conduct. Below are the applicable policies and codes for Safe Sport and other forms of conduct.

For our student-athletes:

It is our aim that student-athletes read, understand, and acknowledge what they are responsible for and how they are protected by our institution. We encourage our student-athletes to come to us with any questions, feedback, or clarifications needed.

We also adhere to all OUA governance policies (PDF) as a condition of our membership.

This chart outlines the different processes available to students. Complaints will be resolved using the simplest option possible given the circumstances.

Complaint resolution processes: Complaints will be resolved using the simplest option given the circumstances. Consultation: Complainant seeks help from Staff Resource Person (SRP), or complaint forwarded from a university department (e.g. Campus Security). The SRP assesses impact of incident and students’ current needs, options are reviewed together, and the complainant decides how to proceed. Any time there is an imminent risk of harm, staff members are obligated to act to protect safety. Within reason, participants may choose to change from one process to another in order to best serve their needs. Option 1 -- Complainant chooses to resolve the matter with the respondent independently. Option 2 -- With some coaching from a Staff Resource Person, complainant chooses to engage with respondent directly. Option 3 -- A Staff Resource Person facilitates discussion with the parties and resolution is reached together. Option 4 -- Formal negotiated process seeks a solution that repairs the harm done and is satisfactory to all. Option 5 -- Formal adjudicated process assesses evidence, draws conclusions, and imposes an outcome where appropriate. Record-keeping: For options 2-5, a summary of case forwarded to the office of the AVP Students
