Tuesday, May 24, 2022, Peterborough

Trent University is excited to announce the selection of Erica Evans as the new head coach of the Trent Excalibur women's varsity lacrosse team.

"We are extremely excited to have Erica as our new head coach with the Excalibur women's lacrosse team," said Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Athletics and Recreation. "With her experience and success as an assistant coach with the Excalibur program and also an elite athlete at the international and collegiate levels, we know that she will continue to build on the exceptional legacy and culture of student-athlete success for the upcoming season."

As the assistant coach of the Excalibur women's lacrosse team for the last two seasons, Evans steps into the head coaching position after gaining experience and learning alongside former coach Tori Wasson who started the team and lead the Excalibur Women's Lacrosse team to multiple OUA championships.

"Tori has given so much time and effort into this program to take it to these heights. There was no one better to set the foundation for the program and lead it to where it is today," Evans said "The things I love most about the culture that Tori has instilled is family," said Evans. "I hope to continue bringing together student-athletes from different backgrounds and experiences and allowing them to have a place where they can feel comfortable and a place to allow them to be themselves."

A former NCAA Division 1 student-athlete, Evans played a big role in leading the Maryland Terrapins to a NCAA Championship in 2019, after transferring from Canisius College, where she holds the all-time scoring record (186 goals) during her three seasons with the program.  On the international stage, Evans helped Team Canada capture gold at the 2015 U19 Women's Lacrosse Championship, before making her senior Team Canada debut at the 2017 World Cup. She has since represented Canada at the 2019 and 2021 World Championships.

As she takes the helm after the team earned back-to-back OUA Championships, Evans hopes to continue the culture of winning within the team and continue to build on the legacy that has been set over the years.   "At the beginning of the season, the coaches and student-athletes set goals for the team and we are striving to be the best," said Evans. "The players that have come in buy into the team culture and mindset, because they are competitive and determined people. This has allowed the team to build on that family aspect, by helping everyone relax when it comes down to the parts of our season where we have to dig deep and work hard."

Evans looks forward to bringing her years of experience and connections to her first summer and training camp as head coach Having connections as a head coach within high school-level lacrosse, she hopes to build a strong core of players and future prospects going into the 2022 OUA season.

"Being the head coach now and having connections through many places in Ontario, I have a lot of platforms where I can see the talent that is in Ontario. Training camp is a place to master skills, get the new players' feet wet and build off of our successes from last year. It is a new team with new dynamics and new skills, so I am very excited to get started with this group come August!"
