Trent Excalibur Rower, Grace VandenBroek Named 2021 OUA Rowing Athlete of the Year

Following back-to-back podium performances, Grace VandenBroek receives recognition from the OUA for her achievements, character and leadership as a student-athlete

Grace VandenBroek, is wrapping up her 2021 rowing season with a crowning achievement, being named OUA Rowing Athlete of the Year. Grace won the gold medal in the women's single event at the OUA Rowing Championships before a bronze medal finish at the Canadian University Rowing Championship.

"This is an award I have seen given to others in the past and I'm honoured to be joining that strong group of women," said Grace. "I have worked extremely hard over my rowing career - at Trent and beyond - to push myself to my full potential and it is a great feeling to be recognized for this work."

During the season, the 21-year-old earned victories at the Head of the Trent Regatta and the Head of the Rideau Regatta in the women's single competition, adding to her accomplishments in 2021.

"On the water and in the classroom Grace represents what it means to be a Trent Excalibur student-athlete and an exceptional high-performance rower," said Deborah Bright-Brundle, director of Trent Athletics and Recreation. "Her character, respect and support for her teammates embodies the characteristics of a leader in the 1Excalibur family and we are so happy and proud to see her recognized by Ontario University Athletics."

This past July, Grace represented Canada at the World Under-23 Rowing Championships, competing as part of the quadruple sculls boat, placing 11th overall.
