Excalibur volleyball co-captain Driscoll named recipient of Ontario University Athletics' Merit Award; Saunders, Knier named All-Stars

Ontario University Athletics has named the major award winners and all-stars for the 2021-22 regular season on Tuesday. Capping off an historic season for the Excalibur women's volleyball program, three Excalibur student-athletes were selected for the OUA awards; Brooke Driscoll (OUA Merit Award), Genna Saunders (2nd Team All-Star), Taya Knier (All-Rookie Team).

Fifth-year from Selwyn, Ont., libero Brooke Driscoll earned the OUA Award of Merit for their community service and involvement in volunteer work. Serving as a co-captain of the Excalibur women's volleyball team, Driscoll's leadership and energy on-and-off the court has guided the team not only to a historic first OUA playoff berth in program history, but their win also represents the Excalibur's first OUA major award winner.

Fellow co-captain of the Excalibur volleyball team, Genna Saunders continued to bring her veteran leadership to the team, earning herself a nod into the OUA 2nd Team All-Star team. On the court, she led the Excalibur with 1.93 kills per set (33rd in the OUA), 105 points (19th), and 2.3 points per set (35th).

Wrapping up the Excalibur recipients, first-year middle Taya Knier put up one of the most solid defensive seasons in Excalibur program history. Her 1.26 blocks per set led not only the OUA but also nationally among U Sports teams. Knier also pitched in offensively, adding 2.1 points per set (48th in the OUA) trailing only Saunders on the Excalibur team.

The Trent Excalibur women's volleyball team finished the 2021-22 OUA season with four wins to finish fifth place in the OUA East division and earning their first OUA playoff berth in program history.
