Excalibur Weekend Wrap-up (Nov 5-7): Excalibur wrap up outdoor seasons, strong start on the volleyball court

After a strong team showing at the Ontario University Athletics Rowing Championships the previous week, the Trent Excalibur Rowing team returned to the Welland International Flatwater Centre this past weekend for the 2021 Canadian University Rowing Championships (CURC), hosted by Brock University.

Reigning OUA Rowing's Female Athlete of the Year Grace VandenBroek led the Excalibur over the weekend, racing to a bronze medal (7:18.34) in the women's open single event.

Overall, the Excalibur rowing team concluded their season with the women's team ranked eighth with 40 points, and the men's team finishing 13th in the standings with 11 team points.

On the volleyball court, the Excalibur women's and men's got their OUA season underway. The Excalibur women's team got the action underway in front of the home crowd at the Trent Athletics Centre on Saturday. Although falling 3-0 (13-25, 21-25, 16-25), the team showed strong play and teamwork against Nipissing, bouncing back on Sunday with strong defensive play to get on the board in a 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 17-25) loss to the Nipissing Lakers, gaining experience and points to build on.

The men's were on the court next, trading points early in the match, while showing skilled plays as a young team, before losing 3-0 (23-25, 17-25, 14-25) and 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 22-25) during the weekend doubleheader against Nipissing.

Next up on the schedule is a Friday night matchup against the RMC Paladins. Friends and family can register for tickets to attend every home game at the Trent Athletics Centre, while we continue to offer streams of our games at OUA.tv.

Concluding the fall season outdoors, the men's lacrosse team travelled to North Bay for the 2021 Baggataway Cup, hosted by the Nipissing Lakers. Earning a bye into the semi-finals, they matched up against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. First- year Taite Cattoni got the Excalibur out to a quick 3-2 lead after the first quarter but the Gryphons' game would prevail as the Excalibur's season came to a close, with a final score of 13-10.
