Excalibur Men's Rugby Start Season Strong at Home
The Trent Excalibur men's rugby team had a picture-perfect start to their 2024/25 season. Facing the McMaster Mauraders at home, under torrential downpours and in front of a packed Justin Chiu Stadium, the men won 29-20.
McMaster opened the scoring in the first half, but third-year Caleb Hickey (New Lowell) answered with the first Excalibur try of the season with second-year Darren Kusinski (Guelph) completing the conversion. McMaster pushed hard and extended their lead to 20-7, but they would not score again for the rest of the night.
Trent dominated the scrums, which led to second-year Austin Allen (Thornbury) scoring his first try of the night, with the conversion completed again by Kusinski.
In the second half, it was evident that Trent took control of the contest, with Allen immediately scoring his second try of the night, with hometown second-year Steven Owen perfecting the conversion to take the lead. Owen would go on to convert a penalty goal late into the contest, extending the lead to 24-20. The game would be put to rest by a late try scored by third-year Gabriel Tait (Toronto).
The Men's Rugby team hope to continue their dominance at their next game at Brock University on Saturday, September 21st at 1 p.m.
