The nation's future Olympic rowers will soon call Trent University home, as Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) today announced Trent as one of five university NextGen Hub partners selected to identify and train high-performance rowers to compete for Canada at the highest levels of the sport.

"Trent University is extremely proud of our long-standing tradition in the sport of rowing," says Deborah Bright-Brundle, director, Athletics and Recreation at Trent. "Year after year our talented rowers continuously excel at all levels of competition and Rowing Canada's designation of Trent as a NextGen Hub cements this tradition and also ensures our athletes continue to have the best available resources to succeed."

Rowing is embedded into the sporting culture of Trent University. The University's enduring history of excellence in the sport, together with its long-standing partnership with the Peterborough Rowing Club, were instrumental in Trent being selected as one of five RCA hubs. This groundbreaking program is a multi-partner initiative between Trent University, the Peterborough Rowing Club, Rowing Canada Aviron, RowOntario, Own the Podium and Canadian Sports Institute Ontario.

"The designation of Trent University and the Peterborough Rowing Club as a NextGen Hub offers tremendous opportunity to continue to advance rowing in the community," says Brian Love, president of the Peterborough Rowing Club. "With a long history of developing high performance, championship rowing talent, Trent and the Peterborough Rowing Club offer a winning partnership for RCA."

Future Olympians in the program will also benefit from Trent and Peterborough's second-to-none rowing setting on the banks of the Otonabee River and state-of-the-art training facilities at the Trent Athletics Centre, including indoor rowing/paddling tank. Here, athletes will benefit from an unparalleled opportunity to combine high performance training while studying at Ontario's number one undergraduate university.

The RCA's NextGen Hubs will provide all-encompassing high performance services to identified NextGen rowers. Hubs will provide optimal coach to athlete ratios, extensive performance planning, and enhanced technical coaching capacity. Sport science and sport medicine support will also be embedded within these daily training environments.
