The Excalibur men’s and women’s rowing teams hit the water at the OUA championships and came away with a handful of medals in St. Catherines on Saturday. Originally scheduled as a two-day event, a decision was made the night before competition to run all races on a single day to avoid inclement weather on Saturday. The Green & White remained focused even with the change. On the women’s side, fresh off competing in the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Grace VandenBroek (Douro-Dummer, ON) took home silver in the women’s single. The men’s team reached the podium four times, including a bronze in men’s eight, silvers in Men’s Coxed Four and Lightweight Double, and a gold for first year rower Spencer Kielar (Guelph, ON).

Men’s Lacrosse had a massive game as they hosted the McGill Redmen at Justin Chiu Stadium, with first place in the East on the line. The Excalibur needed the win by two-goals or more to clinch the top seed. Taking a 4-3 lead into the first break, the Excalibur and Redmen ensured the crowd were entertained through the first 20 minutes. The game would tighten up in the 2nd and 3rd quarters, with no team taking more than a one goal lead. The fourth was a different story though, as the Excalibur began to flex their offensive muscle. Scoring four of the final five Excalibur goals, fifth year Attacker Jeff Fernandes (Whitby, ON) reaped the rewards of a stinging attack. The Excalibur would stay disciplined throughout the game and walk away with a 12-7 victory, ensuring that they qualified for post-season with the top seed in the East.

A nice moment came after the game as both teams came together to acknowledge Mental Health Awareness through the Student Athlete Mental Health Initiative by taking a photo together with the SAMHI banner. Today was designated as a Mental Health Matchup event that saw promotional efforts to raise awareness and end the stigma of mental health.

Trent will now host the Ottawa GeeGee’s in post-season action at Justin Chiu Stadium on Saturday, November 3rd, 2018, game time to be confirmed, with a trip to the Baggataway Cup National Championships on the line.
