Trent Excalibur got the varsity soccer season going with a trip to the Nation’s Capital this weekend. First up was a trip to Ottawa U for the women’s team on Saturday, followed by a trip for both the men’s and women’s teams to Carleton on Sunday.

The Ottawa Gee Gees are always a tough matchup, and this year they were surprised by a much improved Excalibur team. The Excalibur women came out strong, and both teams held each other back in the opening 15 minutes of the match. The GeeGees broke the ice in the 17’, scoring the first goal of the game. The match would stay that way for the next 55 minutes, when the GeeGees would double their lead in the 70’.

The second goal lit a fire under the Excalibur, who stormed back with a goal by #7, Haley Giles (Almonte, ON), playing in front of her fans who travelled from her hometown just outside the city. The game was tense from there on out, and although the GeeGees potted a couple more, the score line did not represent how close the match was.

Sunday almost got off with a bang for the Excalibur, as two golden chances in the opening 3 minutes of the match against Carleton just missed the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Excalibur, the missed chances built the confidence for the host Ravens, who would put away 3 quick goals in the first half, countering Trent’s 1. Both teams would trade goals to open the second half, with the Excalibur giving up late goals again to end the match. The men were schedule to start at 3:15pm on Sunday.

Next up for the men is their home opener at Justin Chiu Stadium Friday with a 6:00pm kickoff. Both teams then travel up Highway 115 to UOIT on Saturday.
