Busy weekend for Excalibur sports saw Trent Men’s and Women’s Curling teams compete at the OUA Championships, Men’s and Women’s volleyball teams compete twice at home, and the Trent Women’s Fencing team compete at the OUA Championships

Summary

In a busy week for Excalibur sports, which saw both the Men’s and Women’s curling teams travel to Sault Ste. Marie for the OUA Championships, and the Trent Women’s fencing team travel to Ottawa for their OUA Championship, the Excalibur were able to play the role of spoiler.

The OUA Curling Championships saw Men’s and Women’s teams from fifteen Ontario Universities compete for the banner. The Trent teams had a tough start to the tournament, but were able to stay competitive as the weekend went on. The Women’s curling team won two matches against Algoma and UOIT over the weekend, but were not able to qualify for the semi-finals on Monday. The Trent Men’s team was able to play spoiler in a win against Guelph, but were not able to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Trent Women’s fencing team travelled to Ottawa for the OUA Women’s fencing Championships over the weekend, which saw strong performances from Ashley Hodgson who finished eleventh, and Rachel Gilham who finished twentieth. Ashley lost her second round poule in a close 15-13 match, losing to the eventual bronze medalist.

In volleyball action, the Trent Excalibur hosted back to back Women’s and Men’s matches over the weekend. The Trent Women’s team was able to win both of their matches over the weekend in front of the home crowd, including a decisive 3-0 victory over the Nipissing Lakers. On Sunday, the Women’s team defeated the York Lions 3-1, with strong performances from Genna Saunders who had 12 kills, Austen Condie who had 11 kills, and Heidi Hayes who had 34 assists. The Men’s volleyball team played well in their two home games over the weekend, but ultimately were not able to win. A strong performance from Jacob Bothen who had 10 kills with a .438 hitting percentage.
